Finance Director

A third of the world's crop production depends on honeybee pollination, yet beekeepers lose 40% of their hives each year. To be part of the solution, our team's mission is to provide beekeepers and growers with the data-driven tools needed to raise thriving honeybee colonies. We believe that the technology being built by our team - including AI models - will lead to a future where pollinators are considered an essential factor in feeding our planet. With our digital hive management platform, Nectar's goal is to equip commercial migratory beekeepers with technologies that enable them to make data-driven decisions to raise healthier bees to secure our food supply.

The ideal candidate for the Director of Finance position should possess a keen interest in harnessing the power of finance to drive positive change within our food system, aligning with Nectar's mission of building a robust economic engine to foster impactful contributions towards the betterment of our planet.

As our client base keeps growing and our product keeps evolving, we're looking to find someone who is eager to roll up their sleeves and help our team execute Nectar's go-to-market and fundraising strategies, notably by helping senior management  prepare for a Series A round of financing.

Responsibilities

Financial, Fiscal & Legal Compliance

  • Lead financial operations across all entities, including bookkeeping, financial reporting, tax filings, payroll, and compliance with IFRS and Canadian/U.S. regulations.
  • Manage the internal accounting team and ensure accurate payroll, sales tax, and regulatory filings.
  • Maintain the company’s cap table and oversee fiscal/legal compliance.
  • Identify and manage grant opportunities and support HR planning in collaboration with senior leadership.

Financial Strategy & Analysis

  • Deliver monthly financial reporting and performance analysis to senior leadership, comparing actuals to forecasts.
  • Develop and maintain financial models tailored to agtech dynamics (e.g., seasonality, regulation, market trends).
  • Lead budgeting, pricing strategy, and market expansion planning using data-driven insights.

Cash Flow & Cost Management

  • Implement cash flow forecasting and working capital strategies suited to a B2B SaaS agtech model.
  • Optimize costs and operating budgets while maintaining scalability and operational efficiency.
  • Communicate financial insights in an accessible way across the organization.

Fundraising & Stakeholder Relations

  • Support fundraising by preparing financial projections, investor materials, and due diligence documentation.
  • Manage relationships with investors, banks, government funding agencies, and strategic partners.
  • Oversee SR&ED claims and related financing programs.

Your profile

  • You’ve got 5+ years of experience in finance, ideally in high-growth startups or tech-driven environments where you’ve helped shape the financial direction of the business.
  • You hold a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or something related — and if you’re a CPA or have an MBA, that’s a bonus.
  • You’re familiar with B2B SaaS models and know your way around recurring revenue, unit economics, and the nuances of scaling a software company.
  • You’ve led budgeting, forecasting, and reporting efforts — and you know how to keep things both accurate and adaptable.
  • You understand that good financial and administrative systems aren’t just for finance teams — you build tools and processes that work for everyone, whether they’re in the field, on the product team, or in ops.
  • You’re comfortable working in iterative, fast-moving environments and know how to make good decisions even when things aren’t perfectly defined.
  • You’ve worked closely with senior leadership and boards, aligning financial plans with broader strategy and helping shape the company’s trajectory.
  • You’ve supported fundraising rounds — from financial modeling to investor decks to due diligence.
  • You’re a clear communicator who can break down complex financial ideas so they actually make sense to non-finance colleagues.
  • You’re fluent in English and French.

About you

  • You’re excited to become an expert in agriculture and commercial beekeeping — not just the numbers, but the industry context that drives them.
  • You’ve got a sharp financial mind and you can pick up on technical and operational concepts quickly, earning trust across teams, including with product and engineering.
  • You communicate financial insights clearly, and you share your expertise with colleagues in a way that’s constructive, collaborative, and confidence-building.
  • You’ve led through messy, fast-paced situations before — juggling big goals, tight timelines, and constant change — and you keep a clear focus on what moves the business forward.
  • You care about customers and understand that financial strategy isn’t just about efficiency — it’s about building something that works for the people we serve.
  • You’re results-driven and hands-on. When there’s a gap, you step in. When there’s a fire, you help put it out.
  • You thrive in a startup environment where structure is still forming and ideas are constantly being tested.
